Primary Function

Under the supervision of the Manager or designate, performs all forms of general labour work associated with the operation of the wastewater treatment facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform general labour work, general housekeeping/cleaning, handle equipment and materials associated with the operations.
  • Carry out mowing/trimming of grass and shoveling snow.
  • Carry out litter control around wastewater treatment facility grounds.
  • Lift mid to heavy range items and operate overhead cranes.
  • Perform work in a safety conscious manner including safely operating assigned tools and equipment.
  • Perform internal and external painting.
  • Load and unload chemicals, materials and equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and assist plant staff in carrying out duties (e.g. carrying tools, etc.)
  • Assist in the installation, operation and maintenance of various items of plant.
  • Assist truck drivers during deliveries/pickups.
  • Perform general care and maintenance duties with respect to the building and grounds.
  • Operate other equipment and vehicles as may be assigned by the Manager or designate.
  • Perform all reinstatement works resulting from Commission activities which may include landscaping, gravel and other site cleanup activities.
  • Operate tractor trailer, tandem vacuum truck and tandem dump truck as required.  When not required to drive one of these, would perform the duties of the Building Process Maintainer at assigned plants.
  • Perform all other related duties, as assigned.

Reports to:     Manager or Designate

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Education: 

  • Grade 12 or NS Department of Education equivalent.

Experience: 

  • Must have one-year related experience in municipal maintenance operations.
Other Requirements

Certificates / Licenses / Registrations:

  • NS Class 5 Drivers License in good standing.
  • Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training:
  • First Aid 
  • WHMIS
  • Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements
     
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Must have knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets
  • Must have a valid NS driver’s license
  • Must have a good attendance and work record (health assessment may be required)
  • Must be willing to accept work related training
  • Must become familiar with HW, Occupational Health & Safety practices and have ability to work safely and report and workplace hazards
  • Must be willing to undergo immunization treatments and any personal health condition checks which may be required.
  • Must be able to work with a minimum of supervision and be a team player
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public and staff
  • Must meet and maintain essential physical requirements of the position as described in Working Conditions
