Primary Function

As a Human Resource Assistant, you will work in conjunction with other People & Culture team members to provide hands-on support in a broad range of human resources functions including recruitment and retention, employee relations, labour relations, training and development, performance management, policy development and workforce planning ensuring consistency in application. You will be responsible for building and maintaining strong relationships with employees at all levels, and communicating and delivering various HR programs and initiatives to the business. The HR Assistant will assist with the development and implementation of strategic Human Resources plans and the provision of HR support to internal clients.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist the Talent Acquisitions Specialists and Human Resource Business Partners as required including attendance at various Committees as a non-union representative.
  • Participate in the development and updating of policies with respect to organizational need and as required due to changes in legislation while ensuring there is consistent corporate application.
  • Ensure job descriptions are maintained and kept up to date in a standard approach.
  • Perform Human Resources generalist functions including staffing and selection, onboarding, retention strategies, performance management and succession planning.
  • Responsible for the effective delivery of all recruitment tools including performance and behavioural testing and ensuring consistency in utilization.
  • Support the corporate attendance management program ensuring consistency in application.
  • Keep abreast and research current and potential labour relations issues and participate in the administration of the day to day labour/employee relations activities including the provision of advice, interpretation and processing of grievances and strategic planning for collective bargaining. 
  • Ensure all legislative (federal and provincial) requirements are met and keep up to date on all legislative issues as related to all Human Resource functions. 
  • Research, organize and coordinate the delivery of corporate training as required.  
  • Coordinate corporate events such as Service Awards Banquet.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends/developments through networking with government agencies, regulatory bodies, consultants, and other sources.
  • Contributes to a positive working environment and staff morale.
  • Performs other related duties as may be required.
     
Reporting Relationships

Reports to:  Manager, People & Culture/ Supervisor, People & Culture

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Education:  

  • A university degree in a related field and ideally hold a CPHR (Chartered Professional in Human Resources) designation or be willing to obtain. (Other suitable equivalent combinations of directly related formal education and experience may be considered).

Experience:

  • Broad related HR generalist experience.  Previous experience in a unionized environment would be an asset.

 

Other Requirements
  • Must have or be willing to obtain the CPHR (Chartered Professional in Human Resources) designation.
  • Must be willing to undertake and maintain the following safety training:
    • First Aid
    • Globally Harmonized System (GHS) (Formerly WHMIS)
    • Additional safety training as identified based on legislative and operational requirements
       
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Above average knowledge of Acts and other legislation affecting all areas of human resources.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the areas of payroll management, pension plan and benefit administration. 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a team environment to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Demonstrated supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage change.
  • Ability to carry a heavy workload while maintaining a high degree of accuracy with confidentiality being a primary requirement

Salary Band 4 ($58,330 - $72,912)
