Halifax Water is accepting applications for One (1) Term Full Time Accountant in the Corporate Services Department.
Under the supervision of the Manager of Accounting, the Accountant, as part of a team, is responsible for maintaining accounting records as well as ensuring accuracy and compliance with accounting procedures and reporting requirements.
- Maintain the accounting system including the coordination of the flow of work, staff training, preparation of financial information and performance of related record keeping and reporting functions in a timely and accurate manner.
- Perform accounting functions including the processing, balancing, maintenance and reconciliation of accounts payable, accounts receivable, the general fund bank account, general ledger accounts, journal entries in accordance with Halifax Water accounting policies and timelines. Other accounting related duties as required.
- Administer capital project accounting as well as prepare/provide, analyze and assess status reports.
- Administer the accounting of capital cost contribution and local improvement charge processes.
- Maintenance of cost records for capital assets in terms of capitalization and retirement data, depreciation calculations, and back up data, including the close out of capital work orders in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Initiate contact with and respond to inquiries from suppliers, contractors and staff regarding accounting related issues.
- Prepare general ledger and sub ledger analysis and reconciliation as required.
- Administration, file processing and staff training relative to purchase cards.
- Accounting work orders, including set up, close out, and third party billings, and maintain all related files.
- Prepare monthly/ quarterly/ yearly remittances and related reports for government and regulatory bodies. (e.g. Nova Scotia Harmonized Sales Tax (HST), the Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB).
- Acts as a resource person in other departments for related work as required.
- Provide input with regard to accounting system requirements to meet the needs of Halifax Water, and to ensure compliance with accounting procedures.
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
Reports to: Manager of Accounting
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- Undergraduate degree in business with a concentration in accounting, or equivalent level of recognized accounting designation, CA, CGA, CMA; or an equivalent combination of related formal education and experience.
- Familiarity with ERP financial systems (Cayenta) and Electronic Business Banking would be assets.
Experience:
- Three years senior accounting experience
You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and Halifax Water’s Occupational Health and Safety Program Manual.
- Computer skills including: good keyboarding skills, a good working knowledge of word processing (preferably Microsoft Word), proficiency in complex spreadsheet applications (preferably Microsoft Excel), and the ability to perform relevant applications in related software packages.
- Good organizational, analytical skills and communication (verbal and written) skills.
- Ability to prioritize, work under pressure, handle a heavy workload, meet established deadlines and deal effectively with internal and external customers.
The Salary for this position is as per Halifax Water CUPE Local 1431 Collective Agreement: Starting Salary $79,841.27.
