Primary Function

The IS Support Technician I role is to support and maintain the HRWC computer systems, desktops, and peripherals. This includes installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining and upgrading all hardware and equipment while ensuring optimal workstation performance.

The IS Support Technician II role is to support and maintain the HRWC network and computer systems. This includes resolving escalated end user requests, installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining and upgrading hardware and software while ensuring optimal workstation and network performance. Perform and provide support duties of IS Support Technician I as required due to workload or escalation.

Duties & Responsibilities

IS Support Technician I:

Strategy & Planning:
1. Evaluate documented resolutions and analyze trends for ways to prevent future problems.
2. Assist in preparing, maintaining, and upholding procedures for logging, reporting, and statistically monitoring PC performance.
3. Document instances of hardware failure, repair, installation, and removal.
4. Assist in developing long-term strategies and capacity planning for meeting future computer hardware needs.
5. Support development and implementation of new computer projects and new hardware installations.


Acquisition & Deployment:
1. Assist in software releases, roll-outs and communication to the end users.
2. Conduct research on computer products in support of PC procurement. Evaluate and recommend hardware products for purchase.
3. Write technical specifications for the purchase of PCs and related products.
4. Recommend, schedule, and perform PC, hardware and peripheral equipment improvements, upgrades, and repairs.


Operational Management:
1. Liaise with, and provide support to, staff on computer operation and other issues
2. Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor and troubleshoot end user workstation hardware and networked peripheral devices.
3. Where required, install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot associated end user workstation software.
4. Perform on-site analysis, diagnosis, and resolution of complex PC problems for a variety of end users, then recommend and implement corrective hardware solutions, including off-site repair as needed.
5. Monitor incoming requests to the Help Desk to ensure courteous, timely and effective resolution of end user issues.
6. Prioritize and schedule problems. Escalate problems to the IS Support Technician ll or IS Technician lll when required.
7. Record, track and document the service desk request problem-solving process, including all successful and unsuccessful decisions made and actions taken, through to final resolution.
8. Perform preventative maintenance, including checking and cleaning of workstations, printers, and peripherals.
9. Test fixes to ensure problem has been adequately resolved.
10. Perform post-resolution follow ups to Help Desk requests.
11. Develop and maintain an inventory of all computers, printers and other peripheral equipment.
12. Liaise with third-party support and PC equipment vendors.
13. Perform such other related duties as may be assigned.

IS Support Technician II

Strategy & Planning:
1. Evaluate documented resolutions and analyze trends for ways to prevent future problems.
2. Assist in preparing, maintaining, and upholding procedures for logging, reporting, and statistically monitoring PC and Network performance.
3. Document instances of hardware failure, repair, installation and removal.
4. Assist in developing long-term strategies and capacity planning for meeting future network and computer hardware needs.
5. Support development and implementation of new computer projects and new hardware installations.
6. Alert management to emerging trends in incidents.


Acquisition & Deployment:
1. Assist in software releases, software roll-outs and communication to the end users.
2. Conduct research on computer products in support of PC procurement and development efforts. Evaluate and recommend hardware products for purchase.
3. Write technical specifications for purchase of PCs, networking hardware and related products.
4. Recommend, schedule, and perform PC hardware and peripheral equipment improvements, upgrades and repairs.


Operational Management:
1. Provide support to assist IS Support Technician I when required.
2. Escalate problems to IS Technician III when required.
3. Apply diagnostic utilities to aid in troubleshooting.
4. Perform hands-on fixes at the desktop level, including installing and upgrading software, installing hardware, implementing file backups and configuring systems and applications.
5. Perform preventative maintenance, including checking and cleaning of hardware.
6. Test fixes to ensure problem has been adequately resolved.
7. Perform post-resolution follow ups with IS Support Technicians l as required.
8. Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Minimum qualifications for this position include:

Grade 12 plus a post-secondary diploma in Computer Science/Information Technology; combined with at least 6 months of experience (two years’ experience for IS Support Technician II), including hands on experience with office automation products, experience with Microsoft Windows desktop and server operating systems, data communication protocols, familiarity with the fundamental principles of ITIL, client connection to applications such as GIS and SCADA, and AutoCAD and ESRI products experience are considered assets. 

The IS Support Technician I role requires one of the following: Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP), CompTIA Network+ and/or A+, equivalent certifications may be considered. The IS Support Technician II role requires CompTIA Network+ and/or A+ certification and one of the following: Microsoft Certified IT Professional (MCITP), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), or an equivalent certification may be considered. 

One must have access to reliable transportation.
