Primary Function

Halifax Water is inviting applications for one (1) Water Quality Research Student. This employment opportunity is available for approximately eight (8) months from May to December 2026. Duties & Responsibilities

Job Duties:  The successful candidate’s roles and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Conduct water sample collection, processing and analysis from distribution system and water treatment plant locations in support of both seasonal and specialized water quality research programs.
  • Perform sampling at water supply lakes, feeder streams and wells in support of source water protection plans and water quality research.
  • Operate and maintain field and laboratory water quality equipment.
  • Conduct data entry and analysis to support water quality research programs.
  • Provide support for the Lead Service Line Replacement Program by assisting the Water Quality inspector and the Water Quality Programs Supervisor.
  • Other duties related to assisting the Water Quality Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

Qualifications:  This opportunity is open to students currently enrolled in a two-year technical program related to Water Treatment; or post-secondary training in environmental sciences, engineering, microbiology or chemistry with an interest in pursuing a career in Water Treatment and must be returning back to school in Winter 2027.

The successful candidate must have:

  • A valid Driver’s License, satisfactory Driver’s Abstract 
  • A satisfactory background check and pre-employment testing
  • Experience and proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel
Other Requirements

It would be an asset for the successful candidate to have:

  • Basic understanding of water quality chemistry and instrumentation
  • Previous experience in a similar environment
  • Comfortable around water; familiar with boating/swimming; First Aid & WHMIS

Salary:   As per the CUPE Local 1431 Collective Agreement, current rate is $23.99/hr.
