Chebucto - Connaught Ave Water System Upgrades

As part of our ongoing commitment to communicating with customers and the local community, Halifax Water would like to inform you that we are upgrading the water transmission main along Chebucto Road and Connaught Avenue from Newton Ave to Berlin, Halifax, between Newton Avenue and Berlin Street. This work is part of the utility's 30-year, $4 billion investment commitment to improving aging water, wastewater and stormwater systems.   

Dexter Construction will be completing this project on behalf of Halifax Water. The safety of staff, contractors and the public are our top priority during this work.  

To ensure the safety of our communities and our staff, please maintain a safe distance when Halifax Water staff or contractors are working in your area. 

What to Expect

Until approximately the end of August 2025, Dexter Construction, on behalf of Halifax Water, will complete an upgrade to the water transmission main along Chebucto Road and Connaught Avenue from Newton Avenue to Berlin Street, Halifax.  

The typical hours of work will be Monday to Friday 9:00 AM to 9:30 PM. 

Nightwork for this project is tentatively scheduled to begin on July 14, 2025 and will last approximately two weeks. During this time work will take place between 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM Sunday to Thursday. Halifax Water will provide advance notice of this work. 
 

During this project, the following traffic control will be in place:  

  • Alternating lane closures inbound on Connaught Avenue between Berlin Street and Chebucto Road. 
  • Alternating lane closures outbound on Connaught Avenue at Berlin Street. 
  • Sidewalks in the work zone will be closed. Pedestrian traffic will be diverted to the opposite side of the street.

Experienced traffic control personnel will be on-site to manage traffic flows.    

This work will involve excavation, rock breaking, pipework, concrete work, paving and landscaping. Following pipe installation, the work areas will be restored – including repaving the impacted sections of the street and any impacted property. See the attached map for the entire project area. Traffic control personnel will be on-site during this construction to manage traffic flows.  

Some customers near this work will be connected to a temporary water supply system to maintain water service during this work. Separate communication will be shared with those customers. During this work, customers in the project area may experience temporary water service disruptions. The contractor will provide advance notice to the impacted customers for any planned water service interruptions. Wastewater and stormwater services will continue throughout this work.
